Term Life vs Whole Life: A Plain-English Side-by-Side

Most life insurance decisions ultimately come down to a single fork in the road — temporary coverage for a defined window (term life) or permanent coverage built to last for life (whole life). The right answer is usually less about the product and more about the job you need it to do.

The Short Version

One sentence each

Term Life

Affordable coverage for a set window — typically the working/parenting years — designed to do its job during the period your family would feel a financial loss the hardest.

Whole Life

Permanent coverage with level premiums for life and a long-term cash value component — designed for people who want lifetime certainty, not just a coverage window.

A Useful Framing

A way to decide that actually works

Most decisions get easier when you ask: what specific job is this policy doing, and for how long does it need to do it? If the job is "replace income for 25 years while my kids grow up and the mortgage gets paid," term life is usually the clearest fit. If the job is "stay in place no matter when I pass," whole life is built for that. Many households use both — a larger term policy for the working years, plus a smaller permanent policy for life.

Questions

Term vs whole life — common questions

Often, but not always. Term is usually the most efficient way to cover the working/parenting years. People focused on lifetime coverage, estate planning, or a permanent legacy may start with whole life. Many households use both.
